What is an Expo event?
It is a global event for millions of people to share ideas, showcase their innovation, encourage collaboration, promoting progress and celebrating human ingenuity. The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations or The Great Exhibition was the first expo event of the world which was that took place in Hyde Park, London, from 1 May to 15 October 1851.
Some of the most amazing inventions brought to the Expo in the recent years include Telegraph in London in 1851, the typewriter in Philadelphia in 1876, The Ferris Wheel in1893 in Chicago, the diesel engine in Paris in 1900, the colour TV in New York in 1964, IMAX film in Osaka in 1970, and wireless trams in Yeosu in 2012. The Expo site is located in the area known as Dubai South, close to Al Maktoum International Airport. The site covers 4.38 sq km and has four main entrances.
About EXPO 2020
In November 2013, at the general assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) held in Paris, where 167 countries participated, Dubai emerged as the winners to host the Expo 2020, defeating 3 other nations including Turkey, Russia and Brazil who bid for being the hosts of Expo 2020.
Expo 2020 will be the first World Expo to take place in the Middle East, North Africa or South Asia region, which will be held from 20th October 2020 till 10th April 2021 in Dubai. Dubai’s Expo will be a festival of celebrating human ingenuity. 130 countries have announced their participation in the Expo 2020 Dubai. The Expo site is located in the area known as Dubai South, close to Al Maktoum International Airport. The site covers 4.38 sq km and has four main entrances.
UAE selected the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”, sub-themes being Sustainability, Mobility, and Opportunity for Expo 2020. “In today’s highly interconnected world, a renewed vision of progress and development based on shared purpose and commitment is key. While a married human mind, an individual country, or a specific community is both unique and remarkable, it is by working collaboratively that we truly advance.” Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said in support of the bid. The Dubai Ruler promised Dubai would “astonish the world,” in 2020.
The staging of the world fair and the preparations leading up to it are expected to result in 277,000 new jobs in the UAE, an injection of nearly $40 billion into the economy, and an increase in visitors of at least 25 million and up to 100 million.
In recent times, Dubai has made major investments in Real Estate as well as introduced a world’s largest Solar Power Project which is all set to start by Expo 2020.
